Forth Post

Today in english class we discussed chapter one of book two. The title of this chapter is, " And my story waits like a restful beast". This is effective because it gives the reader clues as to what the chapter will be about. In addition to this the title is a simile which compares Aminata (the protagonists) story to a restful beast. This helps the reader to envision that her story currently rests slightly until it is time to publish it. In other words, it shows the reader that her story is slowly developing in the shadows until it is time for is to appear out the darkness with such drastic power and strength just like a beast would.
Two of the main things I took away from this chapter are: Aminata's distrust towards the abolitionists as she explains how they do not clearly see the horrors she has been through. Secondly, Aminata's trust with one of the men from the bunch (John Clarkson). By Aminata elaborating on his attire, she gives the readers further understand of him as a person. This helps us follow why he shall be her successor if she passed before she finishes her story. Therefore, we as readers can conclude that John Clarkson becomes her close ally or companion.

Third Post

I liked ‘Suitcase Lady’ the best out of the three short essays. I liked the author’s tone and easy transitional sentences, as well as her use of literary devices. For example line 8, “with her words she spun herself a cocoon”, this is a metaphor. It is effective because, it compares the homeless woman’s speech to being in a cocoon. As readers you can picture how engaged she becomes by talking so much, almost like she’s captured within herself, similar to how a cocoon would cushion a caterpillar/ butterfly. Another example of a literary device would be line 20, “her suitcase is full of dreams”. This line compares the suitcase as the carrier of her dreams, but in reality we know that humans have dreams and suitcases do not. Therefore by saying the suitcase holds her dreams it gives the suitcase human attributes which it cannot have, making this line a personification.

Second Post

I like the title of the book, because it connects well to the general idea portrayed to its readers. I do not agree with the book burnings because, the title was not meant to be offensive and it was taken from a historical document which was titled The Book of Negroes. I believe the title covers all aspects of what Aminata, the protagonist was going through and, truly captures the perspective of her life. "Aminata's Expiditions" could potentially be a suitable title for the book but it's not as strong as the current title used.

First Post

My name is Tiffany and I like cross-country running, swimming and triathlons. I've done a number of races which varied from five to seven kilometers runs, numerous swimming events and a few triathlons. Out of the three I thoroughly enjoy cross- country running the most, I find it relaxing while pleasurable at the same time. I also like animals, my favorite animal is a dog. I have five dogs in total, three girls and two boys. I enjoy reading descriptive novels and books which get transformed into major motion pictures such as; 'The Help', 'Charlie St. Cloud', and 'Little Women'. During this year, I hope to become more vocal in my english class and achieve the highest level understanding I possibly can.
