Today in english class we discussed chapter one of book two. The title of this chapter is, " And my story waits like a restful beast". This is effective because it gives the reader clues as to what the chapter will be about. In addition to this the title is a simile which compares Aminata (the protagonists) story to a restful beast. This helps the reader to envision that her story currently rests slightly until it is time to publish it. In other words, it shows the reader that her story is slowly developing in the shadows until it is time for is to appear out the darkness with such drastic power and strength just like a beast would.
Two of the main things I took away from this chapter are: Aminata's distrust towards the abolitionists as she explains how they do not clearly see the horrors she has been through. Secondly, Aminata's trust with one of the men from the bunch (John Clarkson). By Aminata elaborating on his attire, she gives the readers further understand of him as a person. This helps us follow why he shall be her successor if she passed before she finishes her story. Therefore, we as readers can conclude that John Clarkson becomes her close ally or companion.
