Third Post

I liked ‘Suitcase Lady’ the best out of the three short essays. I liked the author’s tone and easy transitional sentences, as well as her use of literary devices. For example line 8, “with her words she spun herself a cocoon”, this is a metaphor. It is effective because, it compares the homeless woman’s speech to being in a cocoon. As readers you can picture how engaged she becomes by talking so much, almost like she’s captured within herself, similar to how a cocoon would cushion a caterpillar/ butterfly. Another example of a literary device would be line 20, “her suitcase is full of dreams”. This line compares the suitcase as the carrier of her dreams, but in reality we know that humans have dreams and suitcases do not. Therefore by saying the suitcase holds her dreams it gives the suitcase human attributes which it cannot have, making this line a personification.
